My best friend was married to her sweetheart on Friday. It was a lovely day. At one point during the ceremony, I looked over at Trevor and saw the most beautiful emotion in his eyes. There was no doubt in my mind that he loved and adored Ashley, and that he would take care of her forever. They are a special couple.

Here are a few of their bridal pictures that were taken at the Utah State Capitol and the Bountiful LDS Temple earlier this month. It was a beautiful day!

When I say I love this couple, I'm a little biased. Victoria and her sisters were like a second-family to me in high school. We played volleyball together, had numerous sleepovers and adventures, and followed each other to college! It gets even better...Victoria was a bridesmaid in my wedding! She is one of the sweetest, most genuine people I have ever met. I knew that whoever she decided to marry would be a keeper for sure. And I was right...Keith is so wonderful and sweet! Cam & Kenzie were married in the Salt Lake City LDS temple in late August on the most beautiful, sunny day. They are both so upbeat and vivacious...I felt honored to be their photographer. Don't you just love Kenzie's dress? And Cam looks pretty darn handsome in his gray suit. They are a perfect match.

Kenzie and Cam had a darling backyard reception filled with bright flowers, yummy food, bottled sodas (which, let's face it...are way cooler than canned sodas.), and great music. The dancing pictures at the end of the post serve as a testament to how fun-loving this couple really is. I just loved working with them!

Not even kidding, these were all taken via self-timer on a tripod. I didn't even have a remote so I had 10 seconds to get in place! It was definitely an adventure.

Have I mentioned before that I love weddings? Well, I do. I especially love weddings in California. This beautiful San Diego wedding was wonderful in so many ways. I was so happy to get to work with Sarah and Marty again...I loved how their engagements turned out and couldn't wait to see them on their wedding day! Marty looked so dashing in his suit, and Sarah completely exemplified beauty and grace.

Because their reception was going to be held after their honeymoon, we took a few pictures at their luncheon, and then opted for a quick session on the beach! I wasn't going to complain about that! :)

I was so thrilled when my dear friend Emile approached me about taking her family pictures at the Salt Flats, near Wendover. It was a long drive, but we had so much fun catching up on each other's lives and reminiscing about high school. We arrived at the flats just as the sun was setting and the light was perfect. I was in heaven! Not only did we have a good time taking photos, but we had quite the adventure when one of our cars got stuck in the sand. It took several hours, but we finally got the vehicle out! Normally this would have been a stressful situation, but we had the best time. Thank you Gibson family for allowing me to take your family portraits! :)

Want to know my favorite thing about the party? Watching a dozen or so toddlers running around in super hero costumes. Priceless!

This summer, I had the immense honor of documenting this beautiful couple's engagements, bridals, and wedding day. I came to know them and think of them as friends, and was inspired by their love for each other. Their wedding day was beautiful in every way...the flowers, the attire, the small details, and especially the people themselves. Not only did I get to know the happy couple, but I also found a dear friend in the mother of the groom, Karlene. She is one of the kindest people I know, and a wonderful mother.

As a side note, I took more photos at this wedding than any other previously...so it was difficult to pick my favorites to share with you! I hope this little glimpse does justice to their beautiful day.

Ry is a skilled carpenter, and made these beautiful centerpieces to display photos. What a talent!

I couldn't resist posting this one...Sonee and Ry know how to throw an amazing party! Karaoke and dancing kept their guests entertained all night!

We'll end on my favorite photo of the day. As you can see, most of the guests had left for the night. As I was getting ready to pack up my gear, I looked over and found Sonee and Ry dancing in an empty room. It completely exemplifies their happiness and love for one another. Best of luck Sonee and Ry, I loved working with you!

Fall. My favorite time of year. I love the crisp air, crunchy leaves, hot chocolate, cozy sweaters...the list goes on and on! One of my favorite reasons is that I get to work with families! I spend all spring and summer shooting weddings, so it's a nice change of pace to see young children and sweet families like this one. We went to Squaw Peak in Provo, UT at 8am (early, I know!) to get that pretty morning light. I just love how they turned out. Enjoy!

Last week my husband and I went camping with our extended family and had a wonderful time. I decided to bring my camera along and am so glad I did. We had s'mores, hot dogs, and hobo dinners...then we told silly stories around the campfire. The next morning we played in the nearby stream...which was ice cold! The kids were a lot braver than the adults were...not many of us could handle the temperature. Summer is certainly the most wonderful time of year!

Treasures: Part III ~ Letters

Today I found these. They aren't your ordinary, average, every-day letters.

They were written in 1944 an 1945 by my grandfather.

In World War II.

"Dear Mom + Pop,

I haven't written in about a week or more, the reason being, I have been moving in all that time. I am now in Germany, with the 1st Army. I can't say very much at this time, because the censoring is very tight. So I'll just say that I am still in the best of health and hope and pray you both are the same.

Please don't worry about me, I am ok. Being in Germany isn't as bad as it sounds. God Bless you both.

Love, Dave"

I also found this little pocket Webster dictionary...bound in a little leather case. It is about the size of two quarters...absolutely teeny!

Sonee + Ry at the Salt Lake City Library ~ Utah Bridal Photographer

The architecture at the Salt Lake City library is, simply put, stunning. The beautiful staircases, large windows and quiet setting makes it the perfect place to take portraits (and capture a few stolen kisses!) For this particular bridal/groomal session, we started off with a few photos of Sonee by herself, and then surprised Ry with a "first look."

For those of you who aren't familiar with the concept of a "first look," it is when a groom sees his bride-to-be for the first time dressed in her wedding attire. It's typically done sometime before the wedding ceremony (either at a bridal session or the morning of the ceremony) so that the photographer and couple can document that magical moment. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone who is getting married. It's a beautiful thing.

We ended the session at the International Peace Gardens to add a little greenery to their photos, and it was the perfect time of day. Not too sunny and not too cloudy...the best lighting a photographer could ask for!

Yesterday I posted a few images showcasing my mother's ceramic pitcher collection. After I put the post together, I thought to myself, "Hey Cate! Why don't you do an entire series on little "treasures" found around your childhood home?" I then became exceptionally giddy with excitement (that happens often when there is a camera around my neck) and knew that this would be a fun little project while I'm visiting home. You see, my parents have a plethora of unique and beautiful treasures that I just can't wait to share with you. Today you get a glimpse at some of my favorite vintage books that adorn the bookshelves in my family's living room. Aren't they beautiful? They just make me want to lay down in a grassy field and read all. day. long.

Oh how I loved working with this couple. :) They contacted me a few days before we scheduled the shoot and we planned it all in a matter of hours. It was a nice little change to do something spontaneous! If you haven't checked out downtown Salt Lake City lately, you should walk around and see all the fun boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. It's a happening place, let me tell you. I went location scouting with my husband the night before the shoot and I think we counted 6 or 7 nightclubs partying away just in one square block! I just adore this couple and the beautiful golden light at Wheeler Historic Farm. I loved how comfortable they were with each other and how much fun they had laughing together. My favorite part of the session was when Elizabeth and Matt made cootie catchers. I hadn't seen one of those since elementary school! Matt proposed to Elizabeth with the ring hidden inside, how cute is that?! I couldn't think of a better way to get a personalized ring shot than that! :) Enjoy!

Love is definitely in the air here in Utah! I just adore doing engagement photos. This couple was SO much fun! One of my main goals when I photograph anyone is to capture their true personality. When Sonee and Ry approached me about incorporating their love for the outdoors and their beloved 4-wheeler, I was so excited! Not only were we able to have a fun time taking pictures, but we were able to capture their true character! The scenery was beautiful...it almost made me want to go camping! *Almost.* ;)

One Fine Day

I treated myself to a lovely garden bunch while I was at Costco today. Coral, pale pink, fuschia, and white spray carnations...beautiful. And yes, I did call carnations beautiful. So many people dismiss them as a "tacky" flower (which I agree can sometimes be). But what they don't realize is when you group them together in monochromatic schemes, they look like gorgeous, ruffly roses or peonies! Who knew. :)

What a gorgeous and fun couple! They braved the rain in Provo Canyon one wet, spring day...and I'm so glad they did. After a few minutes of shooting under the awning at Sundance Resort, the sun miraculously peered out from behind the clouds and graced us with its presence just long enough to finish up the session. I was so happy! I absolutely adore the rustic charm of Sundance and never tire of traveling up the windy, narrow canyon just to catch a glimpse of its beauty. When I think of this couple, I think of J. Crew catalogs, delicious golden light, and Tina Fey. You see, Rachel loves J. Crew. And rightly so...she rocks out their clothing better than any cover model could. As for the delicious golden light, how can a photographer forget a location and session in which the beautiful light makes you swoon? The entire time I edited these photos I found myself saying, "I want to go to there." Which brings me to Tina Fey. Rachel and Tyler love watching "30 Rock". Whenever I would ask Rachel to say something funny to Tyler, she would whip out another doozy of a quote. Needless to say, I was doubled over with laughter much of our session.

I absolutely love my clients. I love working with them, getting to know them, hearing how they met, how they got engaged...everything! This couple was so sweet...they laughed, kissed, smiled, hugged, and just made my job so easy. If you want to feel inspired, spend a few hours around a newly engaged couple and you will once again see the world through rose colored glasses. :)

I know, it seems a bit ironic to post something in honor of my dad on Mother's day, but as I was editing these pictures I couldn't help think how much he would appreciate them. Thanks dad for always reminding me to enjoy nature, especially when it comes to trees!

This wonderful family was in town for the graduation of their two lovely daughters recently and I had the pleasure of photographing them! I loved working with them at Wes and Rachel's wedding so I was thrilled to hear from them again. I am so grateful to have such amazing clients...I just wish these ones lived a little closer so I could see them more! :)

Oh how I love this family! I honestly feel like I have the best clients in the world...they go with my zany ideas and completely own it! This family told me they loved going on picnics, so that's what we did. They braved the cold {8am on a spring morning in Utah can be a bit chilly!} and wet grass and I think the pictures that resulted are priceless. I love the candids that are captured when you give a family something to engage in. It makes me smile just thinking about it. :)

Second Shooting with Lindsey Orton Photography

I recently had the pleasure of working with the fabulous (to put it modestly) wedding photographer Lindsey Orton. {Check out her BLOG and WEBSITE.} She graciously allowed me to tag along during Kaylee and Tyler's wedding day and enjoy a few hours of stress-free shooting! The grounds of the Salt Lake Temple were brimming that day with beautiful tulips...it was so fragrant and lovely. We ended the day with an intimate reception at Sundance Resort in Provo Canyon...I instantly fell in love with all of the wood details and rustic charm! There's just something about that place that is magical.

Lauren & Whitney ~ Utah Wedding Photographer

I was fortunate enough to photograph Lauren and Whitney's engagements and bridals, so by the time their big day rolled around, I felt as if we were good friends. I adore this couple and knew their wedding was going to be stunning. I arrived at The Homestead a little early to scope out the venue and was not disappointed! How can you go wrong with a resort in gorgeous Midway, UT? After visiting with the happy couple for a bit and running through a quick rehearsal with the wedding party, the two kissed goodbye and entered their separate rooms. I got a few shots of Whitney getting ready with his best man and was so impressed with how calm he was! Then I was off to see Lauren and all of her lovely bridesmaids. When she put on her wedding dress it was pure magic. The room went quiet and everyone just gazed in awe at how extraordinarily beautiful their friend looked!

After a few minutes of couple pictures it was time to prepare for the ceremony. I have to admit, even I felt jittery! There is such a distinct feeling in the air at weddings...maybe it's the anticipation or excitement...but whatever it is, I love it! It was a simple and beautiful ceremony, filled with promises and an abundance of love. I promise you, I was not the only one to get teary-eyed!

The rest of the day was a fun-filled blur of excitement...family photos, dinner, cake, and dancing. A wonderful reception that truly celebrated a once-in-a-lifetime couple. Lauren & Whit, it was a pleasure to work with you and I can't wait to work with you again in September!

Sunday Walk: Edition 1

Today I went for a lovely Sunday walk with a friend and her adorable son. It was wonderful to hunt for spring blossoms and color, talk, and just enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

Trying to figure out the bubbles. I totally know how he feels.

I loved how this mom and son say "Cheeser!" when they take a picture. :)

It feels so wonderful again to be behind the camera...I can't tell you how long this winter has seemed! This couple was a joy to work with and so cute together! Color.

After a long and dreary winter, any color is very welcome.

I'm taking a friend's advice and shooting for myself this week. And I'm going to find what little color there is in Utah this time of year. You just wait.
